<![CDATA[S Van Horne - Ramblings]]>Sat, 13 Jan 2018 15:28:11 -0800Weebly<![CDATA[Facebook and Pen Names]]>Fri, 16 Dec 2016 23:31:58 GMThttp://authorsvanhorne.com/ramblings/facebook-and-pen-namesI thought long and hard about posting this. I decided that it needs to be post so Authors with Pen names are made aware of what could happen to them.

Some of you are aware that currently my Facebook profile is gone. The reason is the profile was reported as a fake account. This was done in retaliation to not liking what I said in a post (yes, I have screenshots to prove this statement or I wouldn’t have made it). The blessing for me is my author name is my true name and I will be able to get my account reinstated. It will just take a little time.

First let me clarify something quickly. A page to Facebook is what we go and just like. That can be your pen name, hence why my like page is still active. A profile is what you friend. This, per Facebook, must be your real name and not a pen. Again, I am legally S. Van Horne so I can prove this and get it back. Here is the information I was given by Facebook on how to reinstate my account.

As you can see, anyone with a pen name will not be able to get their account back if it is reported as a fake account. The only way you possibly might be able to get your account back with your pen name is if you are registered as a business. That is the only thing I have found in my searching that has worked for a few. How true this is, I honestly can’t say.

Second, the reason I decided to do this post was to just let you, the authors with pen names, know that this can happen to you. I want you to be able to have a plan if it happens. How to protect this from happening, again, I honestly don’t know that answer. There wasn’t enough research out there to be able to say this is how you protect your profile account. So please be careful.

On a personal note, I am still receiving messages/comments on my page but until it is reinstated I am not able to respond. When my account is back, I will go through each one and respond back to you. The outreach and support I have gotten during this has been very overwhelming and gratefully appreciated. I can never thank you enough for reaching and making sure I am okay. It will not be forgotten and will never be taken for granted.

Happy Holidays and Keep writing <3

<![CDATA[Done...]]>Sat, 10 Dec 2016 23:24:13 GMThttp://authorsvanhorne.com/ramblings/doneFirst and foremost, the first Amendment is king. But with that, it brings responsibility… although an author has the inherent right to write his or her story/viewpoints, it is also the inherent right of the reader to express his or her pleasure or displeasure in regarding the content they read. I have expressed this before in a post below. That said, yes, I have posted about an issue I had with a book and now I have people praising me and cursing me for this. Let me explain my post so then my words aren’t taken out of context of what is the issue I have with said book…

My post stated the following:

“Not much can shock me anymore… but a book that has the H kidnapping the h then drugging her and raping her and saying her body was responding so it is okay… no. This sickens me and has me in tears. This is NOT romance. She couldn’t say stop or no. SHE WAS DRUGGED FOR FUCKS SAKE! Sorry but his was just too much. I didn’t even read the book. I was shown screenshots of this part and started bawling and threw up due to what I read. I don’t understand how this is okay. Sorry for the rant. I just can’t…”

So, some say I was telling the author what she should and shouldn’t write… nope I honestly didn’t. I don’t agree with what was in the book because I am a victim of rape but my major issue is THERE WAS NO WARNING! Before you say read the blurb it stated it… no it didn’t. The ONLY thing the blurb was stating was it could be a possible kidnapping, maybe manipulation would have been how he gotten her who knows. But not ONCE was there a mention of rape.

Seeing people state… “It’s just fiction” “Get Over It” “If you have trigger warnings get a therapist” etc… I honestly am speechless at the last part. It makes me think you would tell a Vet who suffers from PTSD to get a therapist for having triggers of fireworks because “they are just for entertainment purposes”.

PTSD, no matter what form it is, is devastating. What triggers some will not trigger all. Just a simple “For 18+ may contain triggers” is all that a lot of people, like myself, are asking for.

Now, as an author I get being careful of your warnings and blurb and how much is too much to tell due to plot in a story etc. Trust me, I do understand! I know not all agree with adding a trigger warning, but this day and age… it should be added.

My feelings on this matter/book would have been the same NO MATTER WHO WROTE IT! I would have still made the same post. To say I went after this author for other reasons is false. If I truly was after her I would have done this with every single book she has ever written. Not once I have done that. Honestly, I don’t care if she reuploads it to amazon, I just ask that a trigger warning be added.

My only issue is with no warning and no hint in the blurb of what was in it… to me that is wrong. Anything else on this book is my own opinion.

Write what you want, but if it includes controversial material, please just be so kind as to provide the public a proper warning so those of us who don’t read this would avoid it.

Moving forward... ]]>
<![CDATA[Telling an author what to write?]]>Mon, 07 Nov 2016 04:15:44 GMThttp://authorsvanhorne.com/ramblings/opinions-authors-vs-reviewsI'm sure what I'm about ready to say is going to piss a lot of people off but hey what he hell right... I posted something on Facebook that drew a few eyes. What you didn't see what was happening behind closed doors in a group. You see someone stated that authors were focusing to much on Drama ARC and forgetting to write the story... This comment stopped me in my tracks.

I honestly have no issues with people having an opinion on how they feel about a story they have read or that they didn't like it. I also have no issues with people warning others about books they know they wont like. Again, no the issue at hand. I feel that you have a right to tell people how you feel about something and have a right to review something you have paid money for. Hell, I do it all the time. That is okay... but what ISN'T okay... is telling an author what they should write or not write. How they should write something or not write something. Telling them they should follow a "trend" others are doing. Telling authors that you have enough drama in your life or in the news that you don't want to read it in real life.. NO THIS IS NOT OKAY!

What you as a reader might not understand is that the story the author is writing is how the characters are telling them to write it out. Most of the time authors write from experience or better yet to escape. Sometimes it is to change how a situation happened in real life, meaning to help them deal with something bad and turn it into something good. The time and energy that goes into a story is huge and sometimes it is just the way things happen. So telling them that you don't appreciate them adding drama or twist or plots in a story that you choose to read... that to me is wrong.

I'm not saying you don't have a right to say, "Hey, I didn't care for the plots or twist or drama. It wasn't my cup of tea or the normal I like to read. That said the writing was okay or grammar needs help..." I think you get what I'm going with here... that is okay. Saying you don't like something is fine but telling authors how they need to write stories or they need to follow a "guideline" that others use... wtf?! (yes I have seen this too) There are so many different authors and genre's out there why are we trying to make all authors write the same? Why not just go... well they aren't for me so I wont read them? When did it become okay to tell an author what they should have in their book or not in their book? Next time you think you want to tell an author how they should write a book... think of this... would you like someone to tell you how to be a wife, parent, or friend... if the answer is no.. then I suggest not telling an author how to do their job in writing a story that they are telling.

<![CDATA[Finally Taking A Stand: Bulling By An Adult]]>Sun, 16 Oct 2016 02:51:50 GMThttp://authorsvanhorne.com/ramblings/finally-taking-a-stand-bullingby-an-adult
When I first entered the Indie world I was blown away by the help and kindness that I saw happening between author/blogger/reader. It is truly a world that would do anything to help one another. I can say that it made me happy to see this. After a year of this I decided to try my hand and finally write that story I always said I was going to do. A few people reached out and supported that choice. I have made some amazing friends and I'm so grateful to them for all they have and do for me. But I have also met some nasty people and people that have tried everything to hurt me.

One in particular has done everything to make me seem like I'm a horrible person. So much so, that I had to block and delete her from Facebook. This was two months ago. I have not said one word and went on as if nothing has happened even though she has told a lot of people that I had ruined her life. She even went as far as to publish the same day as I did telling me she just had to wait for me but behind my back she told others that I am a failure and that my book was horrible. That she published the same day to watch my book fail so she could laugh in my face. When this didn't happen she wasn't happy and then stated that I not only ruined her life but I stole her friends. Some she mentioned were people I have been friends with for years and they didn't know her at all. That is when I decided to block and delete her.

Shortly after this happened a few other people came to me asking questions on why I said things or did things... none of which I said or did. Screenshots were shared and stories were shared and we all realized it was this one person who has an obsession with me that we have no reason why she does. She has even went as far to use my cancer story as her own. I explained that I don't want them making choices between her or I... that if they wanted to be friends with her I'm totally okay with that. Just not to share about me. Their choices for what they done with their friendship with her is totally on them and has NOTHING to do with me.

Since it has been a few months I thought things were finally done... just to find out I'm brought in again into something that I honestly have NOTHING to do with. Again, I'm at a loss at what to do and how to handle this situation. Do I call her out and show people the real her? Do I keep quiet and just smile like I have been doing for the past few months? Do I chance my career and just blow up? Really... what do I do with this? I'm being told to not say a word and let people handle it. But doesn't that make me look guilty because I'm not standing up for my name?

It really makes me want to just walk away, tell people it isn't worth it. I now understand why authors have stopped doing Facebook or social media because it is odd and there are really scary people out there. I guess I'm at my wits end and I'm finally posting something. Am I going to mention her name... no I'm not. Trust me those involved will know who this is about. I'm not hiding anything I just choose not to sit here and bash people. Why don't I name her? I'm worried about her obsession with me. What if I name her... will she retaliate even more and do even more horrible things? I don't want to stir that pot.

So what am I hoping happens... I wish people would come to me asking me if I did these things instead of talking about me behind my back. I'm not a mean person. I have no reason to lie about the situation when I have multiple people who can do screenshots backing up everything that she has done. I'm also hoping that people would just stop with gossip and drama. Does the world really need this? No, we have enough real life world drama to deal with then to listen or do gossip on line.

So... I'm done. I can't do this anymore. I'm stating that I'm just going to stay in this bubble of a few people and leave the rest behind. I have had enough with the drama. I have spoken my piece and now I'm walking away. If you see a change in me... well this is why. ]]>
